A borehole RO plant that turned municipal water into the backup
Rising municipal costs pushed a Cosmo City food producer to make its own water. Five years on, the reverse osmosis plant Prosep engineered is still carrying the site.
For a food producer, water is an ingredient — and when the municipal bill keeps rising, it becomes a board-level number. This Cosmo City site had a borehole; what it needed was a way to turn that raw source into water a food plant could actually use, reliably and at a cost the business could defend.
Prosep engineered and installed a 4.5 m³/h reverse osmosis system on the borehole feed, commissioned in October 2020. The measure of an installation like this is not the commissioning photo — it is what the plant is doing five years later. In a reference month, the site produced around 1,140 kilolitres of its own treated water against 239 kilolitres of municipal top-up, with the municipal connection reduced to a backup used mainly during planned Rand Water shutdowns.
