In vehicle manufacturing, water quality is visible on the product. The surface finishing and paint processes that give a vehicle body its appearance and corrosion protection depend on water of a controlled quality; contamination or hardness in that water shows up as a defect on a panel.

At the other end of the plant, the wastewater from those same processes is oily, loaded and subject to a discharge limit. Both the quality going in and the cleanliness coming out are production issues, because both can stop the line or fail an inspection.
