Scale does not announce itself. It accumulates millimetre by millimetre on the fireside and waterside surfaces of a boiler, and every millimetre is an insulating layer between the flame and the water. The boiler answers by burning more fuel to make the same steam, until the day a scaled tube overheats and fails. By then the deposit has usually been costing money for months.

Inspection & scale analysis

Before anything is dosed we establish what the deposit actually is. Carbonate scale, sulphate scale, silica and iron oxide all behave differently in acid, so we analyse the scale and match the chemistry to it.

Inhibited acid selection

The cleaning solvent is selected for the deposit and the boiler metallurgy, with a corrosion inhibitor in the solution to protect the tube metal while the acid dissolves the scale. The inhibitor separates a controlled clean from an expensive mistake.

Controlled circulation & monitoring

The solvent is circulated under controlled conditions with the cleaning endpoint monitored, so the acid is neutralised once the scale is gone — and not left to work on the steel.

Neutralisation, passivation & disposal

After the clean, the boiler is neutralised and passivated to leave a protected surface, and the spent solvent is handled and disposed of responsibly as a regulated waste stream.

The clean is the start of a programme, not a standalone event. We commission the boiler water treatment programme on the freshly cleaned system, so cycles, blowdown and internal chemistry hold the surfaces you just paid to recover.

FAQ

Boiler acid cleaning questions

How do I know if my boiler needs chemical cleaning rather than just better treatment?

An internal inspection and a deposit analysis settle it. If scale thickness is already affecting heat transfer or has caused overheating, no dosing programme can recover the lost surface; the deposit has to be removed by chemical cleaning first, then held by an ongoing programme. Prosep does the inspection and tells you which case you are in.

Will acid cleaning damage the boiler tubes?

Not when it is done correctly. The solvent carries a corrosion inhibitor matched to the boiler metallurgy that protects the steel while the acid dissolves the scale, and the cleaning endpoint is monitored so the acid is neutralised once the deposit is gone. The risk comes from uninhibited or unmonitored cleaning, which is exactly what an engineered programme avoids.

What happens to the spent acid?

It is neutralised and handled as a regulated waste stream under DWS requirements. Where it needs treatment before disposal, Prosep’s effluent team handles that as part of the job rather than leaving you with a separate problem.

Can you clean the boiler and then take over the water treatment?

That is the intended sequence. A clean boiler with no programme scales again, so we commission the boiler water treatment programme on the freshly cleaned system, which is where the cleaning investment is actually protected.
